What, for you, is the purpose of spirituality or religion?

The purpose of spirituality is to connect with and develop our true self (soul).  Connecting with and developing our our soul is the purpose of us being here as this whole life is a series of tests to develop our soul to its potential.  Spirituality, in essence, manifests our true purpose in life.
This was the original purpose of religion, but over time religions tend to become less involved with spirituality, and more involved with traditions and politics.

Is Religion Real?

Posted on Aug 19th, 2007 by MrBoheezee : Restorer of Balance MrBoheezee
Flower-of-life-small
At one point in my life I became confused about what the 'true' religion was, as in my investigation, the basis of all the major religions all seemed to be saying the same thing, and then I began to ask the silly question of 'Is God Real?'. In being selfish, in my submission to suffering, I began to say I didn't believe in God. Upon contemplation however, i realized the absurdity of this claim, and began to realize that I was asking the wrong question. The question I should have been asking is 'Is Religion Real?'.

I have recently realized the answer to this question, and that answer is no. Religion is not real, only truth is real. Truth has made itself manifest through various ages, in various cultures and geographic locations. Religion is a man-made idea just like class and racial stereotypes. With the idea of religion, those who call themselves Christians believe that they worship a different God than do the Buddhists or Muslims, but it's not true.

Now someone may ask me the question of 'well if religion is not real. then how can I call myself a Baha'i?'. Well for me, calling myself a Baha'i is more of something that I must do because of the concept of religion being ingrained into humanity, but really for me, it is not a 'new' religion, but rather a confirmation of the truths that have come before, and will continue to manifest in days to come.

What would you tell someone about to become a mother?

I would tell her to be joyous for her womb has been blessed to bring forth a child.  I would make sure she knows that with faith in God she will have the strength to endure the struggles of parenting.  I would encourage her to teach the child right moral values, but not to get him attached to dogmas, but rather learn the great spiritual truths.  I would let her know that she can guide her child, but can't mold that child into what she wants but rather that it is the child's decision to make when he or she reaches the age of maturity.

What values shape your life?

The values that shape my life are justice, love, respect and forgiveness.  I believe every human being deserves the respect due to them, and should have the opportunity to let their voice be heard and their story told before any judgement can be passed.  I believe that we should aim to solve conflicts with love, rather than love.  I am not sure who said these words but they ring so true, "Am I not destroying my enemies when  I make them my friends?"
To be honest, I think it is ridiculous that in this day and age when we talk about how civilized and progressive we are that we still believe the only way to resolve conflict is through brute force.  We must learn to realize that we ourselves cannot be truly free unless we can forgive.

I guess I would say I did consciously choose these though, because it is within our power to make the choice of how we will live our lives.

What I can say though is that if I didn't learn the importance of forgiveness I would probably be a monster by now, because that is the inevitable outcome of harboring hate and anger your heart.

Do you think our culture is progressing or declining?

Well technologically we have progressed technologically by leaps and bounds in the 20th century alone with the invention of the car, airplane, telephone, light bulb, computers etc.

We are ever progressing because we have the ability to advance our knowledge to make better decisions, from what we have learned in the past.  Sometimes, however, it can seem that the mistakes that are made are so extreme that there is no second chance.

But although now it seems to be that we are progressing into a downward spiral as a result of unsustainable living and development, I know we will progress because of my faith in God and the hope that he provides.

I guess if I didn't believe that things will get better it may cause me to be apathetic to the destructive behavior that's occuring in the world today.

When would you prefer to be recognized?

If money was not an issue (e.g. an artist unrecognized in his lifetime would be broke), I would prefer to be unknown through my lifetime and leave a legacy after my death, than to be recognized in my lifetime then fade into obscurity.

It seems to me to be a pretty easy decision to make.
If you gain fame for a moment and it fades into obscurity, it couldn't have been anything of great importance, or that had any great impact on humanity at all, and what's the glory in that? Whereas if the passing of man reveals he was is legend, then he must have contributed something of great importance to humanity.

This would also help to give my descendants a boost in confidence that greatness is in their blood, and they may be further encouraged to contribute positively to humanity.

Would you want to be friends, or housemates, with yourself?

Of course I could see myself being friends with my double.  I'd know that there's someone I can count on to be interested in whatever i'm interested, and also someone who would provide support I may need in whatever endeavors i'm taking on.

However, I don't see myself living with a double of myself, because I feel that housemates should complement each other.  If I am living with someone with the same personality traits as myself , then I wouldn't be able to improve on my bad personality traits, because they would be encouraged on a regular basis by my housemate.  Also considering I am not the most organized person, if I my housemate is also not well organized then i'd end up with an overwhelmingly disorganized home.  Not a good thing!

What's the most fortunate thing you've had happen to you?

I would have to say the realization that this life is chock full o' tests for us to develop our souls, and realizing that in many cases where a solution would seem to bring us out on top in a physical sense, it may work against us in a spiritual sense.

It was this realization that allowed to retain my sanity through a very tumultuous event I endured.  In my realizing it was a spiritual battle, I also realized that the person I was in conflict was not the flesh and blood person themself, but an evil which had gotten the best of them and been working through them.  I was able to forgive her for her inability to overpower the wicked thoughts.

I believe the noblest profession in the world is a teacher.  Not an ordinary teacher however (not that that is not a noble profession also), but a one who teaches on a spiritual level and encourages their students to harness their talents and abilities, rather than conform to a standard set of rules.

An acharya.

Religion, if practiced according to holy scripture rather than passed down traditions, has the ability to develop our true self, liberate our soul from worldly desires and draw us nearer to God.

When we recognize God's truth for what it is instead of focusing on who it is that is delivering the message of God's truth, then we can also bring about world peace and environmental harmony.

I think the time I was tested the most was with an ex of mine.  It would have been so easy for me to be vengeful and spiteful toward her for her evil actions against me.

I had instead come to realize that I should have compassion for her as she had succumbed to the tempation to take revenge on me for pain she felt I was responsible for causing her.
